When Maria woke up from anesthesia and (Nat's never gonna forget this) three resurrections, the first thing she saw was the woman curled up into a ball in the tiny plastic chair next to her.
"Hey…"She mumbled, voice still hoarse from intubation during surgery. In a matter of seconds, the other woman's already up and by her side, hovering over her with concerned eyes.
"How are you feeling?" she looked exhausted, dark bags were forming under those emerald eyes. "Like I've been hit by a truck and set on fire."Maria managed a small smile, still dizzy from the drugs in her system.
"Well," the red-headed women chuckled, "you WERE hit by a giant oil truck and they've probably poured several gallons of gasoline on your car before we arrived."
"Oh, are my limbs still intact?"Maria feigned an exaggerated scared expression and made Natasha laughed a bit harder. It was probably really scary for ordinary people to get t-boned and then set on fire. But hey, they are anything but ordinary.
"Yeah, and also your dry sense of humor I see," Natasha added, "too bad." she stopped talking when she realized that Maria's gaze had fallen on her freshly bandaged hands. "I er…rushed a little before you turn medium rare."she shrugged. Natasha didn't even feel the sting when she tore out the door to the mangled and burning vehicle. It wasn't until they were in the hospital when Clint noticed the dried blood on her hands.
Maria's brow furrowed. It seemed as if she was trying to say something, maybe an apology, but eventually she just sighed and looked at her girlfriend. "Go home, Nat."she said tiredly, still drained from the combination of blood loss and injury, "go clean up, eat something, and sleep." she knew the Widow probably hadn't left her side until she woke up, "I will still be here tomorrow, unfortunately."
"Well, last time I turned my head, almost got crispy bacon for girlfriend." Natasha didn't like to think about the 'what if's, but pulling an unconscious Maria Hill out of a pile of burning metal is kind of scary even for the Black Widow.
"Hey, at least I'm delicious!" exclaimed Maria. The drugs are definitely kicking in right now.
"Of course you are," Natasha lean down and kissed her, before standing up. "Go back to sleep," she brushed a strand of raven hair behind her ear,"I will have Clint take over for a few hours."
"Good." Maria nods, before closing her eyes and was out like a light in a few minutes. Natasha kissed her one more time on the forehead, and walked out of the hospital door.
She's gonna have a lovely conversation with the head of CIA.
